GARMENT CARE

Be kind to your Levi's® garments to ensure many happy years of use. These guidelines explain the dos & don'ts of cleaning & treating various fabrics.

CARING FOR DENIM
LESS LAUNDERING

It's best to wash denim as little as possible, not only to prevent shrinking & fading, but to conserve water, which lessens negative impact on the environment. When they are ready for a freshening up, turn jeans inside-out & wash separately in cold water and line dry, if possible.

GIVE UP ON GIMMICKS

Some denim enthusiasts swear that washing dark jeans with a cupful of coffee with keep their color truer, longer. Allow us to instate a no-joe policy! The truth is that even the inkiest of denim garments are subject to fading if machine-washed & dried. Instead, hand-wash them, inside-out in a tubful of cool water. Soak for up to 30 minutes with mild detergent, gently swirl to loosen any set-in sediment & line dry.

DENIM, DE-COATED?

It may seem like a good idea to have embellished or coated denim professionally dry-cleaned, but this can actually damage fragile details like embroidery & over time, wear away waxy finishes. Instead, soak your specialty denim in cold water for up to 10 minutes without detergent, then lay flat until dry.

AVOID COLOR BLUNDERS

To revitalize the color of an old pair of jeans, we've heard you should wash them with a brand new pair to encourage dye transfer. Bad idea? Well, it depends. There is no harm in two very dark jeans going in for a soak together, but there's no telling what sort of tint you'll wind up with when dealing with lighter & more vibrant colors. Good rule of thumb: if the method seems dubious, leave your denim out of it.

CARING FOR SHRINK-TO-FIT®
Consider these your never-wash pair. Seriously. Because these are made from untreated, raw denim, the more they're worn, the more they're expected to fade, whisker, scuff & wrinkle, creating a uniquely customized fit. When absolutely necessary, though, soak your Shrink-to-Fit® jeans with a cupful of Dr. Bronner's Soap for 20 minutes (bear in mind that the warmer the water, the more they'll shrink). Drip dry, then wear them damp until they've molded to your body.
CARING FOR SELVEDGE
This premium-quality raw, heavyweight denim is painstakingly woven on traditional shuttle looms. Because Selvedge jeans are crafted with major care, you must return the favor. On the rare occasions they're washed, soak your jeans in cold water with mild detergent, gently rinse & air-dry.
CARING FOR TWILL
Though twill garments are quite durable, they prefer a stress-free existence. If stained, gently scrub with an up-down motion, then rinse in cold water.
CARING FOR COTTON
Fear not wrinkles and shrinkage. Give just-washed cotton garments a stretch, then dry using low heat. Iron to release creases & spray-starch to keep things crisp.
CARING FOR STA-PREST®
These bad boys are designed to keep a permanent crease and remain wrinkle-free at all times. The trick is not to let them linger in the dryer for too long.
CARING FOR LEATHER
If confronted with a liquid stain, make leather all better by blotting with a clean cloth. Should a more serious spot set in, consult with a professional leather cleaner.
